What are dental implants?

Dental implants are replacements for your missing teeth. They are made from a biologically compatible, non-toxic metal, and are used to replace the structure of your tooth roots. Implants prevent deterioration of bone and gum tissue, as well as other problems that can occur when you are missing teeth. After a period of healing following your implant placement, bone and gum tissue will regrow around your implant to secure it in place.

What problems do dental implants solve?

Dental implants solve a variety of problems, from the aesthetic appearance of your smile to function problems with missing teeth, ill-fitting or uncomfortable dentures or decaying dental bridges.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

In order to be a candidate for dental implants you must be in good oral health. You will need to have enough bone density and healthy gum tissue to support your implant and ensure the long-term success of the treatment.

During your implant consultation, our dentists will discuss several factors with you to determine if you are a candidate. These factors may include:

  • Any existing bridges or dentures
  • The length of time your teeth have been missing
  • Any pre-existing health conditions, including periodontal (gum) disease
  • The quality and density of your bone tissue
  • Your tobacco use

What types of dental implants are available?

There are many types of dental implants available. You can receive implants for a single tooth or for multiple teeth. Implant-supported dentures are a popular and cost-effective option, as they offer you the ability to provide a permanent, stable and comfortable restoration for multiple teeth without incurring the cost of replacing an entire dental arch with implants. Mini dental implants are also available.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of your implants will depend on your dental needs. During your consultation, our dentists will evaluate multiple factors, including:

  • How many teeth you need to replace
  • If you require a sinus lift or other bone grafting treatment to replace lost bone tissue
  • If you have periodontal disease
  • If you need an extraction
  • What type of procedure you would be receiving

We will provide you with an estimate after your consultation. Our office offers many financial options to help you receive the care you need.

What is the procedure for receiving dental implants?

There are 4 main steps in your implant procedure.

You will begin with an initial assessment to determine if you are a candidate for implants and to begin planning your treatment. This assessment will include a comprehensive dental exam and digital X-rays.

The second stage of your treatment will consist of your implant placement, along with any other necessary surgeries required for the success of your implant, such as bone grafting or gingival augmentation (gum grafting or tissue regeneration). An implant post will be placed into your jaw, replacing the tooth roots and anchoring the implant in place.

Following implant placement, there will be a period of healing and recovery to allow the bone and other tissues around the implant to bond to the post, a process known as osseointegration. This ensures that your implant will be stable.

The final stage of your implant procedure is creating and placing the restoration on top of the implant post. Our dentists may provide a crown, bridge or denture to cap your implant and complete your smile.

Do dental implants look natural?

Yes. Dental implants are the closest match for your natural teeth. In some ways, they are an improvement on your natural teeth because they do not decay. Implants are designed as full replacements for the structure of your tooth from roots to crown and look and feel just like your natural teeth.
